Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit Overview & Filing Information

On this page, we’ll discuss the Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit, the current status of the Taxotere Vision Loss Lawsuit, side effects of taking Taxotere, how a Taxotere Lawyer can help, and much more.

What is the Taxotere Lawsuit for Vision Loss and Eye Side Effects?

The chemotherapy drug Taxotere (docetaxel), commonly used to treat breast cancer, has been linked to various severe eye injuries, including vision problems and irreversible eye damage.

Many patients undergoing Taxotere treatment have reported complications like excessive tearing, blurry vision, and even permanent vision loss.

These injuries can significantly impact quality of life, making everyday tasks more difficult and creating new health challenges for cancer survivors already enduring the effects of treatment.

The Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit seeks to compensate individuals who have suffered such vision-related issues as a result of their Taxotere use.

Vision damage lawsuits have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, where the Taxotere Hair Loss MDL is currently centralized.

Our lawyers are currently only accepting Taxotere Lawsuits from individuals who have suffered vision loss or eye injuries related to Taxotere use.

About The Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit

Taxotere lawsuits have been filed against the drug’s manufacturer, Sanofi Aventis, alleging that the company concealed long-term and serious side effects, including potentially permanent eye damage, vision problems, and excessive tearing (epiphora).

Since 2019, the litigation has focused on Sanofi’s failure to adequately warn patients and medical professionals of these risks, leaving thousands to endure unexpected complications beyond their cancer treatment.

If you or a loved one has experienced severe side effects, such as unexplained watery eyes, vision issues, or other eye-related complications from using Taxotere, you may be entitled to compensation.

What Is Taxotere?

Taxotere, also known by its active ingredient docetaxel, is an anticancer agent commonly used during chemotherapy to treat various forms of cancer such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer.

Taxotere combats cancer by over-stabilizing the structure of cancer cells.

This method prevents cancer cells from breaking down and reproducing, thereby reducing the growth and spread of cancerous cells within the body.

Taxotere is part of the “taxane” family of cytotoxic drugs, a class of chemotherapy treatments made from plant alkaloids.

Taxotere was developed by Sanofi-Aventis and first approved for limited use in May 1996 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, meant to help treat individuals with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

It was later approved by the FDA for wider use in 2004.

Taxotere is commonly prescribed to treat patients with:

  • Breast cancer (early-stage breast cancer, operable node-positive breast cancer or metastatic breast cancer)
  • Lung cancer (locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC))
  • Prostate cancer (metastatic prostate cancer)
  • Stomach cancer (advanced gastric adenocarcinoma)
  • Head/neck cancer (squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN))

Taxotere Lawsuits Consolidated Into Multidistrict Litigation

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) consolidated Taxotere vision loss cases into multidistrict litigation (MDL 3023) in the Eastern District of Louisiana.

The Taxotere litigation will be handled by Judge Jane Triche Milazzo.

The MDL for Taxotere hair-loss litigation (MDL 2740) is also centralized in the same district court and handled by the same judge.

As mentioned previously, our law firm is only handling Taxotere Lawsuits related to vision damage, and we are not accepting clients for the Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuits.

Taxotere Eye Injury: What Vision Loss Side Effects are Associated with the Chemotherapy Drug?

Taxotere has been found to lead to potentially permanent damage to the eyes and lacrimal obstruction.

The chemotherapy drug has been linked to the onset of serious eye injury.

Patients treated with Taxotere who experience symptoms relating to vision loss, watery eyes, and other side effects of the cancer treatment should seek immediate treatment from a medical professional.

Timely intervention is important with vision problems related to Taxotere.

taxotere eye injuries

Taxotere eye injuries include:

  • Canalicular stenosis
  • Punctal stenosis
  • Lacrimal Duct Obstruction
  • Excessive tearing or eye-watering (epiphora)
  • Permanent watery eyes
  • Conjunctivitis or blockage of the tear ducts and lacrimal system
  • Scarring of lacrimal system
  • Blurred vision
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Eye infections and irritation
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Headaches
  • Potential loss of vision (cystoid macular edema)

Taxotere’s side effects can severely impact an individual’s quality of life.

How Does Taxotere Affect My Vision?

Taxotere impacts the lacrimal system, the bodily system that includes tear ducts and the structures responsible for tear production and drainage.

Taxotere enters into the tear film, and build-up of the drug may lead to scarring of the lacrimal drainage apparatus and permanent occlusion (blockage).

When the lacrimal ducts or tear ducts are obstructed, bacteria buildup can occur causing infection that can lead to inflammation next to the eye.

If the condition is allowed to worsen, permanent vision loss (cystoid macular edema) is possible.

Sanofi failed to warn and inform about Taxotere’s vision side effects (especially Epiphora) and, as such, thousands of cancer patients who use the chemotherapy drug to combat their cancer have to suffer additional potentially permanent damage.

Canalicular Stenosis And Punctal Stenosis

Canalicular Stenosis and Punctal Stenosis involve the narrowing, scarring, or complete obstruction of the canaliculus or punctum — critical structures in the eye’s tear drainage system.

These conditions prevent normal tear drainage, causing chronic watery eyes (epiphora), irritation, and, in severe cases, permanent vision problems.

In individuals treated with the chemotherapy drug Taxotere, components of the drug can secrete into the tear film, accumulating within the lacrimal (tear) drainage system and resulting in inflammation and scarring.

This type of irreversible damage often requires invasive procedures, including surgery, to restore function or relieve symptoms, and, in some cases, even long-term medical management.

Studies have shown that Taxotere-associated canalicular stenosis can severely impact quality of life due to persistent, painful eye conditions.

The drug’s manufacturer has faced criticism for failing to warn users of these serious risks, leading to legal actions and advocacy for greater transparency around Taxotere’s side effects.

Epiphora (Excessive Tearing)

If left untreated, affected individuals might not be able to drain tears naturally, leading to the excessive tearing, “Epiphora” or excessive tearing/watery eyes, other health effects, and the potential need for corrective surgery.

Taxotere Eye Injury Misdiagnosis

Breast cancer patients often take a number of medications and chemotherapy drugs to manage their disease.

With the multitude of medications come side effects that may be difficult to pinpoint the source of.

Taxotere side effects, such as watery eyes and other eye injuries, could be hard to identify as coming from the chemo drug.

Doctors and eye specialists may also misdiagnose eye conditions related to Taxotere use as allergies or other side effects, not knowing the full scope of the dangers related to conditions like Canalicular Stenosis, Punctal Stenosis, Lacrimal Duct Obstruction, Epiphora, and more.

If you took Taxotere and are now suffering from chronic watery eyes or other eye injuries that can potentially be traced back to your use of the chemo drug, get in touch with a Lacrimal Specialist or Ocular Plastic Surgeon as soon as possible.

These sorts of doctors will have a keen understanding of Taxotere-related eye injuries and side effects.

Treatment for Taxotere Eye Injuries

Patients who have developed eye injuries such as canalicular stenosis and punctal stenosis due to Taxotere exposure require specialized medical interventions to restore proper tear drainage and alleviate symptoms.

Canalicular Stenosis Treatment

Canalicular stenosis involves the narrowing or blockage of the canaliculi, the channels that drain tears from the eye into the nasal cavity.

Treatment options include:

  • Dilation and Stenting: This procedure involves dilating the narrowed canaliculus and inserting a stent to keep it open. Silicone tubes are commonly used as stents and may remain in place for several months to prevent re-narrowing.
  • Canaliculodacryocystorhinostomy (CDCR): In severe cases where standard dilation is ineffective, a CDCR may be performed. This surgical procedure creates a new tear drainage pathway directly from the conjunctiva to the nasal cavity, bypassing the obstructed canaliculi. A glass or Pyrex tube, known as a Jones tube, is inserted to maintain the new passage.

Punctal Stenosis Treatment

Punctal stenosis refers to the narrowing or blockage of the puncta, the small openings on the eyelid margins that initiate tear drainage.

Treatment approaches include:

  • Punctal Dilation: A simple procedure where the punctum is dilated using a small instrument to widen the opening and improve tear drainage. This may provide temporary relief but often requires repetition.
  • Punctoplasty: Surgical enlargement of the punctal opening to facilitate better tear drainage. Techniques such as the two-snip or three-snip punctoplasty are commonly employed to excise a portion of the punctal tissue, effectively widening the opening.
  • Stenting: Similar to canalicular stenosis treatment, a stent may be placed in the punctum to keep it open. Monocanalicular stents like the Mini-Monoka are often used and can remain in place for several months.

Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to prevent permanent damage to the lacrimal drainage system.

Patients experiencing symptoms such as excessive tearing, eye irritation, or recurrent eye infections after Taxotere treatment should consult an ophthalmologist promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Eye Injuries are Linked to Taking Taxotere?

The Taxotere Vision Loss Lawsuit claims that the chemotherapy drug Taxotere has been linked to multiple eye injuries and vision problems in breast cancer patients.

These eye injuries and symptoms include:

    • Excessive tearing in the eyes (epiphora)
    • Lacrimal duct obstruction (canalicular stenosis)
    • Blocked tear ducts
    • Optic neuropathy
    • Swollen eyelids
    • Tears remaining in eyes for extended periods
    • Permanent watery eyes
    • Eye pain and irritation
    • Conjunctivitis

Eye injuries associated with Taxotere can lead to painful conditions that require immediate medical attention, and some people filing Taxotere lawsuits have experienced permanent visual changes due to chronic irritation and adverse reactions.

  • What are Average Taxotere Settlements?

Individual Taxotere Lawsuit settlement amounts are yet to be determined.

The Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit is ongoing, and as more developments occur, we will have a better idea of what to expect for individual Taxotere settlements.

However, our Taxotere Lawyers estimate that individual Taxotere Lawsuit settlement amounts may range between $20,000 to a few hundred thousands dollars depending on the circumstances of an individual, their damages, and also the direction of the Taxotere litigation.

These projections are merely estimates based on prior product liability and dangerous drug lawsuits.

These estimates are by no means a guarantee of financial compensation in the Taxotere Eye Injury Lawsuit.

  • How Much Does A Taxotere Vision Injury Lawyer Cost?

Our firm represents clients on a contingency fee basis, meaning we do not charge any legal fees unless we successfully secure compensation for injuries related to Taxotere.

This fee structure helps alleviate financial stress for individuals dealing with symptoms such as blurred vision, severe abdominal pain, and permanent hair loss related to the chemotherapy drug Taxotere.

With no out-of-pocket fees required, you can focus on managing side effects like twitching, dizziness, and fluid retention without the burden of legal expenses upfront.

  • Do I qualify for a Taxotere eye injury lawsuit?

If you or a loved one has suffered eye injuries, such as cystoid macular edema, chronic excessive tearing, or vision issues, after receiving a Taxotere chemotherapy treatment, you may qualify to file a Taxotere lawsuit.

Our legal team is actively helping individuals who’ve experienced severe side effects like irritated skin, dizziness, and permanent vision damage.

To learn more, use our chatbot on this page for an instant case evaluation or contact our firm directly to discuss your eligibility for the Taxotere Eye Injury MDL.

  • What is the Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuit?

In Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuits, plaintiffs allege that Taxotere causes permanent hair loss or chemotherapy induced alopecia.

The Taxotere Hair Loss Lawsuits are separate from the Eye Injury Lawsuits, and are centralized in a separate multidistrict litigation.

The Taxotere Hair Loss MDL is MDL 2740.

Sanofi knew since the 1990s that cancer patients taking Taxotere had an increased risk of hair-related ailments like alopecia.

Sanofi did not provide adequate warning to patients of hair-loss side effects, prompting lawsuits.

Sanofi finally added permanent hair loss as a side effect of taking Taxotere on its FDA approved label in 2015.

  • Is There a Taxotere Class Action Lawsuit?

There is no Taxotere Class Action Lawsuit, but lawsuits related to eye injuries and hair loss are centralized into multidistrict litigation (MDL).

There are two separate MDLs related to Taxotere.

One MDL is strictly for eye injuries and vision loss related cases, which TorHoerman Law is accepting.

The other MDL relates to patients who have suffered permanent hair loss as a result of Taxotere use.

TorHoerman Law is not accepting cases related to permanent hair loss or alopecia.

In the MDL, compensation is awarded based on individual cases, taking into account unique circumstances such as severity of symptoms like permanent hair loss and blurred vision, rather than a one-size-fits-all class action approach.

This distinction ensures that each patient’s specific injuries and damages are fairly considered.

  • What is the Taxotere Treatment Plan?

Taxotere’s treatment plan typically runs at three-week intervals, but other treatment options recommend a weekly dose.

Fewer trips to the doctor for treatment make Taxotere more attractive to both patients and doctors.

Taxotere has also been approved for administration outside of the hospital (in 60-100 mg/m2 doses).

Similar chemotherapy treatments require hospitalization to cope with extended infusion times.

As is warned on the Taxotere label, toxic death occurs in around 2% of metastatic breast cancer patients and about 11.5% of patients with other tumor types involving abnormal liver function who are using Taxotere.

  • Is Taxotere Still In Use?

Yes, Taxotere remains widely used to treat breast cancer and other cancers despite reports of severe side effects such as blurred vision, cystoid macular edema, and permanent hair loss.

In fact, Taxotere remains one of the most prescribed drugs within its class (taxane), with an estimated 75% of breast cancer patients receiving this chemotherapy drug.

Taxotere treatment does not always require hospital stays, making it a more convenient choice, though patients should be informed of risks such as eye injuries, including lacrimal duct obstruction and painful eye conditions.
